Sri Lankan education is facing the greatest tragedy it has ever faced in the history. Dr.C.W.W Kannangara’s dream of free education has become a miracle with the glory of ‘Asia’s Miracle’ which has created the grave of democracy in Sri Lanka. Politicians who are well known as wealthy leaders of this country have become the pioneers who are eradicating all the roots of democracy slowly and secretly. They have made poor Sri Lankan voter blind behind the victories of our own heroes emphasizing them as victories of the politicians whose boasting ability has cleverly hidden all of their weaknesses.
Today they are not only challenging the university lecturers by trying to eliminate their fight for a better employment status but also all the poor helpless children who are unable to pay the price of a degree in a local or a foreign university which has become an unfair way of rich people to be dignified as educated in the society.
As university students we are not fighting to get gold in tons but to get our own right of free education which has been won by our ancestors as a result of a struggle against local and foreign forces. Even though the government is pretending to be alright with these fights there is a huge conflict inside. To overcome so called problems the only plausible solution they see fit is “selling the free education at the highest price at a public auction”. They have already built the foundation strongly by establishing private universities whose quality of education is not evaluated in acceptable criteria.
The largest part of educated, intelligent youth of this country are leaving the country in search of better dignity and a better salary. The government pretends them to be overlooked only because the majority of the politicians who are swollen with vanity do not understand the value of a well educated citizen to the development of a country. No wonder the situation has pushed Sri Lanka to a fatal condition.
Ministry of higher education stays deaf before the pleads of university lecturers who are much greater than the politicians who only have shabby words and empty minds. If we do not see how dreadful it is for our own lecturers to go on pleading for their own rights on knees there’s no use how much we learn.
Nevertheless anyone can understand every citizen of Sri Lanka has a big responsibility to protect democracy of the country.
We can create a resistant force on the eliminating policy of the government by making the society aware of this tragedy. It is a must that we should not betray what our dear old leaders have won for us. We are the dream of the people who truly work hard to make this country a miracle.
